Oct 17, 2008 Are there any laws on bringing in Fish to Roatan and taking fish out?

If you are coming from the States, you may bring up to 2 kilos of frozen fish in a sealed package with its official labeling. You need a permit to bring more per person. If you prefer, you may buy bait fish here. Please check with Flying Fish packaging company in Coxen Hole or Anthony's Key resort. You may take your fish out of the country as far as the authorities here are concerned, but you should check with U.S. officials on customs requirements for bringing them into the States.

I understand that the new custom's officers are becoming stricter in cruise passengers bringing suitcases off the cruise ships. I under this and very much respect it. We would like to bring supplies to the Roatan Children's Home while we are in Roatan in January of 2008. Do you know if we will be allowed to bring our supplies musical instruments boxes of band aides soap shampoo etc in shopping bags? Shopping bags are not closed where the top is fully opened and visuable and can be easily inspected. Also will we have to pay a type of duty of items? An answer please will be appreciated. We are second time visitors to your country and would like to show respect for your laws and customs.

If the officials question you and you explain that they are charitable donations, I suspect they will be more lenient. I am not sure about the cruise ship, but sometimes the airport officials don't even open suitcases at all.

The enforcement of duty is hit and miss, and I cannot guarantee you that there will be no duty, but you are normally allowed to bring a certain amount in duty free. The more appearance of bringing in a large bulk of something, the more attention you draw to yourself.
